2016 marks 150 years since the incorporation of Tazewell by the Virginia Assembly in 1866. Join us for a special celebration of our Town’s Sesquicentennial!
Treasure Hunt – Month of April
For the month of April, every Wednesday Tazewell Today will post a clue in local newspapers based on the history of Tazewell. That clue can be used to locate the hidden egg for that week. The eggs will only be hidden in public spaces in the corporate limits of town. Special prizes will be given to the finder of each egg. Happy hunting!
Main Street Mile – Saturday, May 28, 9:00 am
The Main Street Mile will be held on Saturday, May 28, at 9:00 am, and will be start in two segments. The first group will be the Mile Race timed running competition starting at 9:00 am with a pre-registration fee of $20 ($25 race day) or $12 for students ($15 race day). Both adults and students will receive a commemorative t-shirt and medal. Shirts guaranteed to pre-registered runners only. Prizes for top 3 male/female winners.
The second group will be the FREE untimed Open Mile Run/Walk event starting at 9:30 am. Commemorative t-shirts will be available for purchase for $12.
Both groups will start on Main Street and finish at the Tazewell High School lawn. We encourage everyone in our wonderful community to attend! Parking will be available at THS. Ride the free transit from THS to Main Street and join the fun. Special trophy for the Tazewell school with the most participants in the race and/or free walk!

Decorating Contest – July 1
Adorn your home and/or business for the Sesquicentennial! Judging will be held on July 1 and prizes will be awarded for best decorated. We ask that you leave your decorations out for the month of July for our many celebrations. Go green/gold, green/white, red/white/blue – whatever you feel represents Tazewell best!
Sesquicentennial Ball – Sat. July 2, 7 pm-10 pm
Join us on beautiful Main Street for a night of dinner, music, and dancing under the stars from 7pm-10pm. Musical entertainment provided by the Jeffersonville Skirmish Band and heavy hors d’oeuvres served by the VIP Room. Period costume requested but not required. Enjoy a carriage ride while you travel back in time. Tickets available June 1 for $25.00 each. Alternate rain location at the VIP Room.
Sesquicentennial Parade and Independence Day Celebration – Monday, July 4 – until dusk
Celebrate this anniversary with a parade dedicated to our Sesquicentennial! There will be prizes for floats best representing Tazewell history. The parade will start at the Tazewell Little League field area, with lineup at 3:00 pm, traveling to Tazewell High School. The parade will start at 4:00 p.m. Once we arrive at THS, join us for anniversary cake to commemorate this special event. Starting at 5:30 p.m., the evening will include sack races, hula hoop contests, bounce house fun, and many more festivities! Rain date for both the parade and fireworks celebration is Tuesday, July 5.

Main Street Summerfest – Saturday, July 23
Summerfest wraps up with festivities and vendors all day, ending with a Cruise-In and music. A 50-year time-capsule will be dedicated in honor of the Sesquicentennial, to be opened on the Bicentennial in 2066.
